Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore

125 Years of Compassion, Innovation and Medical Excellence

Founded in 1900 by the visionary physician Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore has evolved from a one bed clinic into one of India’s most respected academic medical institutions and a globally recognised centre of excellence in patient care, medical education and research. Celebrating 125 years of dedicated service, CMC continues to uphold its enduring mission of providing compassionate, ethical and high quality healthcare to all, irrespective of background or ability to pay.

Guided by its timeless motto, “Not to be served but to serve,” CMC has earned an international reputation for combining clinical excellence with innovation, education and service. Today, the institution comprises approximately 3,700 teaching hospital beds across multiple campuses, delivering primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary care while serving millions of patients from India and around the world each year.

The Visionary Founder

CMC Vellore traces its origins to the extraordinary vision of Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder (1870 to 1960). Moved by the preventable deaths of three young women who were unable to receive medical care because they refused treatment from a male physician, she dedicated her life to transforming healthcare for women in India. Returning to Vellore after completing her medical education in the United States, she established a one bed clinic in 1900, laying the foundation for an institution that would transform healthcare, education and medical research for generations to come.
